Mothana is an artist, master calligrapher and teacher. He learnt the art of Arabic Calligraphy under Professor Abbas Al-Baghdadi at the Iraqi Calligraphers Association, since 1983. Mothana received an honorary PHD in Arabic calligraphy from Dar Assalam college in Turkey, 2015. He has won many awards including the First prize of the Thuluth Script at the Fourth International Competition (Hamad Allah Al-Amasi), Istanbul, 1998 and the Burda Prize for Arabic Calligraphy in Abu Dhabi, 2009. He has also given personal exhibitions in Sharjah in 2009 and 2017 and in Luxembourg in 2017.
